日前,国际顶级学术期刊Nature发布了全球各地区科研机构和高等院校2016年4月1日至2017年3月31日的自然指数（Nature Index，简称NI），数据显示：合肥研究院在68种NI刊物上共发表论文151篇，以WFC29.32的成绩在中科院108所研究院所中位居第11位。
2014年11月，自然出版集团首次以全新的“加权分值计数法”(WFC，weighted fractional count)指数方式发布了全球“自然指数”。作为一项科研评价指数，自然指数对于评价科研机构在国际高水平学术成果产出方面具有重要作用。
自然指数的分析是基于各科研机构在Nature系列、Science、Cell等68种自然科学类期刊上发表的研究型论文数量进行计算和统计。这68种期刊只占世界期刊总量的0.6%，但其引用量约占自然科学期刊总引用量的30%。发表在这些期刊上的论文，从一定程度上代表了全世界的高水平研究成果。
